Imagine starting the day hoisting yourself into a jeep taller than any private vehicle has any business being. You're the king of the road, riding in comfort from Reykjavík to a dazzling hidden waterfall, off the beaten path parts of Iceland that few others have the chance to see firsthand and the startling impact that the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull left on the country's landscape.
Hrafnhildur and Katrín from Nordic Visitor's Reykjavík office didn't have to imagine, because they got to do just that when trying out the Eyjafjallajökull Exclusive volcano-themed day tour.
This is We tried It. Hrafnildur tells us more below about this amazing experience.
So, how was the Eyjafjallajökull Exclusive day tour?
We really liked the tour. The guide was very intelligent and funny at the same time. I liked his stories, especially about elves and trolls.
We stopped at Urriðafoss waterfall, the Eyjafjallajökull Erupts Information Centre at Þorvaldseyri, Skógafoss waterfall, the plane wreck at Sólheimasandur, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Gljúfrabúi waterfall and Sólheimajökull glacier.
What were the highlights of the day?
We LOVED Gljúfrabúi Waterfall! It‘s without a doubt one of Iceland‘s most beautiful hidden gems!
Also, I had never been to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck before and I really liked it. There is something so mysterious about it.
What was it like riding in a super jeep?
It was an amazing experience! Especially when we drove on the black sand beach and we were all hopping and "skopping!"
Editor's note: "skopping" is Icelandic for "bouncing" -- feel free to use the term on your next superjeep excursion.
Did you learn anything interesting about the famed Eyjafjallajökull?
At the Eyjafjallajökull Erupts Information Centre we watched a very interesting video about the eruption at Eyjafjallajökull. It was beautiful and horrifying at the same time.
Not about Eyjafjallajökull, but I also learned what to do when your car gets stuck in a pond when we stopped to help another vehicle that had gotten into a bit of trouble.
What tips or advice would you give to others interested in embarking on this day tour?
You should definitely see the video at the Eyjafjallajökull Erupts Information Centre. Also, wear good shoes and warm clothes, so you're comfortable and sturdy when exploring the Gljúfrabúi hidden waterfall and protected from the wind on the black sand beach. Iceland can be a wet and windy place!
